Abstract
378,288. Sewing threads. LYDEARD, E. H., Randwick, Plymouth Road, Redditch, Worcestershire. Nov. 30, 1931, No. 33163. [Class 112.] A suture or sewing thread for spring-eyed surgical or other needles is characterized by an eye at one end for engaging with the eye of the needle. When the suture is of catgut, silk, linen thread, silk-worm gut, or Japanese gut, an eyed ferrule is attached thereto, but in the case of a silver or other metal wire the end of the wire itself may be provided with the eye. The eye may be circular, rectangular or triangular in shape. Various constructions of ferrules are described. They are preferably of metal, but may be moulded, for example, from the composition known by the registered Trade Mark " Bakelite." That shown in Fig. 3 is obtained by suitably stamping and drilling a tube of silver or other non-corrosive metal. Smooth shoulders 6 are produced. The suture 8 is introduced into the ferrule, and is fixed by crimping the ferrule, or by an indented annulus 7 produced by suitable pliers. In a modified form, Fig. 9, a split tubular socket 1b is formed and closed upon the suture as described in Specification 288,425, [Class 112, Sewing &c.], for eyeless needles. In this and other modifications, the shoulders 6 may be of annular form instead of on each side of the ferrule. A modification shown in Fig. 5 comprises an eyed tubular or solid member 1b suitably roughened at the area of contact with the tubular member 1a ; the junction of the two is effected by crimping or spinning down the end of the tube la at 10. In a further modification, Fig. 8, a loop 3a of rustless steel, silver or other metal is secured to the tubular element 1a. The eyes are not necessarily throughway apertures, but may be provided with a web 3c as shown in Fig. 13.
