[Class 143.] In a method of checking the weight of the cigarettes leaving a cigarette machine, each weighing of a group of cigarettes taken periodically from the delivery member of the cigarette machine and supplied to a balance is registered by counters, of which one counts the weighings of correct weight, whilst the others count the weighings of over or underweight. The cigarettes from the cigarette machine are fed by a grooved drum 1 to a conveyer band 2 which may deliver them to a packing machine. Periodically, a pivoted member 3 is actuated by a cam 7 so as to deflect a predetermined number of cigarettes from the drum into a weigh pan 9 suspended from a balance beam 11. The weigh pan is held against upward movement beyond the mid-position of the beam, by a plunger 14 controlled by a lever 13 and cam 12. After a group of cigarettes has been deposited in the pan, the cam 12 raises the plunger 14 and the beam 11 assumes a position dependent on the weight of the cigarettes. A spring arm 21 on the beam is thus adjusted over a series of electrical contacts 24 .. 28 connected to counters 34 .. 38. A bent lever 29 is now actuated by the cam 12 so as to press the spring arm 21 against one of the contacts and thus actuate the corresponding counter. The readings of the counters inform the operative of the numbers of weighings of standard, overweight or underweight dimensions and the range of divergence. The continued rotation of the cam 12 depresses the plunger 14 and pan 9 until a stationary abutment 19 opens a discharge gate 9b and drops the.cigarettes on to the conveyer 2. Instead of employing electric contacts 24 .. 28, the counters may be actuated by optical, photo-electrical, pneumatic or mechanical means actuated by the throw of the spring arm 21.
