Abstract

366,053. Producing, rectifying, or modulating alternating currents. HARRIES, J. H. 0., Shirley, Old Road, Frinton-on-Sea. July 22, 1930, No. 22055. Addition to 328,680, [Class 39 (i), Electric lamps, Arc &c.]. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v).] A cathode-ray tube is made to act as a modulator, amplifier, rectifier or generator of electric currents. According to the parent Specification a cathode ray is caused by the input currents to oscillate in one or two dimensions while impinging on a " record " so constructed as to vary the current in the output circuit, which includes the electron stream. The record may constitute either an electrode, which may be fluorescent, or a screen. According to the present invention the record is of a non-periodic character. The jet, which is " saturated" and may be of circular or strip-shaped cross section, may impinge on an electrode 8, Fig. 2b, after passing through a screen 9 having a triangular aperture, the current being varied by movement of the cathode jet relative to the screen. The screen may consist of thin nickel sheet and may have a rectangular or circular aperture or present a straight edge (Figs. 2a, c, d, not shown). Alternatively the jet may impinge on and move in relation to a resistance member 42 or 43, Fig. 5, which may consist of a sputtered metal film and may have a centre tapping as at 14 (Figs. 2e, f, not shown). This member may have lateral extensions 20, Fig. 2g, to permit of double variation of current strength by movement of the jet in two dimensions ; or a straight-edge screen 18, Fig. 2h, may be used in conjunction with a resistance member 42 for the same purpose. Inductance or capacity may be used instead of resistance. In Fig. 5 the first cathode-ray tube 30 acts as an amplifier, bv variation of the fraction of resistance 42 included in circuit with the cathode ray. Tube 31 acts as a rectifier, the ends of resistance 43 being connected together so that the output voltage depends on the distance from the centre-tapping 14 at which the jet 36 impinges on the resistance 43. The input and output circuits may be arranged to produce a negative-resistance effect. For modulation, the jet may be caused to move over a twodimensional " record by means of two pairs of deflecting electrodes arranged at rightangles to one another, the carrier oscillations being applied to one pair and the modulating oscillations to the other. The tubes may have internal metallic deposit on their walls, internal collector electrodes, electrostatic screens, or fluorescent screens, and may contain more than one cathode jet.
