Abstract
Aluminium, magnesium, and their alloys are refined by the introduction into the molten metal of a hygroscopic compound, e.g. zinc chloride, or magnesium chloride, in the form of a hard homogeneous mass coated with a waterproof material such as wax, grease, oil, or commercial varnish. Substances such as ammonium, sodium, potassium, lithium, or barium chlorides and potassium or sodium fluorides may be added to the hygroscopic compound in the formation of the mass.
