Abstract
356,207. Cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. and DEACON, H. J., Columbia House, Aldwych, London. June 4, 1930, No. 17222. [Class 36.] A machine for twisting up electric telephone cables of the type formed of pairs, quads or groups of pairs or quads comprises a rotatable yoke adapted to twist up a pair of wires, and a second rotatable yoke to twist up another pair of wires, the yokes rotating at different speeds and a rotatable cage being provided to twist the pairs together. The yokes are disposed and rotated in axial alignment, the cage also rotating about the same axis. In the construction shown, a yoke 6 is mounted on columns 21, 22 and carries a reel 8 of paired wire 10. A cage 14 consisting of lateral bars 36 and transverse bars 37 is mounted between columns 20, 21. In the cage 14 is rotatably mounted a yoke 7 carrying a reel 9 of paired wire 11. Through a chain of gearing, the rotary movement of the cage 14 is adapted to rotate the yoke 7 and the speed of the yoke 7 can be varied by varying the gear train. The pair 10 is led through a hollow bearing, over guides and round the yoke 7, as shown, to a forming die 28 fixed to the cage 14 and then through a hollow bearing 3 to meet the pair 11. The pair 11 passes from the reel 9 to the plate 28 and through the hollow bearing 3 where it is formed into quads 13 with the pair 10. The speed and direction of rotation of the yokes 6, 7 is varied by varying the gear trains. In a modified construction for twisting four wires into a quad each yoke 6, 7 carries two wheels set one behind the other, the wires on the two reels being twisted up as they leave the yoke, and the twisted pairs being formed into a quad at the exit end of the cage.
