Abstract
<PICT:0343698/IV/1> The lustre of knitted fabrics or garments constructed of yarns of organic esters of cellulose such as cellulose acetate or organic ethers of cellulose, alone or mixed with silk, cotton, wool, or reconstituted cellulose is reduced by subjecting the goods to a delustring treatment while maintaining them in such a position that distortion or wrinkling is avoided or prevented. The goods may be treated while stretched or while held substantially vertically in respect of the wales and courses. In some cases, hosiery is suspended in a frame by attaching the toe and top portions of the hose by threads to opposite sides of the frame, or the hose is placed over wire frames which maintains it stretched. In another method, the goods are placed in open-mesh net bags 3, Fig. 1, weighted at 7 and suspended from rods by threads passed through their tops, the toes being weighted to maintain them vertical in a chest supplied with wet steam. The delustring may also be effected by a soap bath at 95 DEG C. for 30 minutes; or by a bath containing soap and Turkey-red oil in which the goods are treated for 1 hour 65 DEG C., 1/2 -hour at 75 DEG C., 1/2 -hou at 85 DEG C., and finally, 1/2 -hour at 92-93 DEG C. In some cases, the delustring is effected by precipitating in the goods white insoluble salts such as barium sulphate or zinc sulphide, for example, the material may be treated with barium chloride and then with sulphuric acid, or with zinc chloride, which acts also as a swelling-agent, and then with sodium sulphide. Barium sulphocyanide, acting as a swelling-agent, may also be employed or a foreign swelling-agent as acetic acid may be added to the solution of the salt from which the precipitate is obtained. Dyes may be added to the delustring bath, or the goods may be dyed before or after the delustring treatment. Specification 318,642, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], is referred to.
