Abstract

342,058. Sliding doors. O'ROURKE, J. F., 17, Battery Place, New York, U.S.A. Dec. 2, 1929, No. 36871. [Class 20 (iii).] A self - closing sliding door has means whereby it i s automatically pressed into firm contact with the wall as it reaches the closed position. A door 6, Figs. 3 and 5, the latter being a sectional plan on the line 5-5, Fig. 3, is suspended from an inclined track 11 by wheels 9, which are journalled in the doorsupporting bars 10. Endwise movement of the door is limited by stops 12, 13, on the wall 4, the door, when abutting against the stop 12 (as shown), closing an opening 5a in the wall. A lug 14 on the door engages with a bar 15 which is adjustably secured to the wall by bolts 16 and which has the same inclination as the track 11. The bar 15 has an inwardly projecting portion 15a and an inset portion 15b substantially parallel with the wall. In the sliding movement of the door from the open to the closed position, the parts 15a, 15b of the bar 15, by their engagement with the lug 14, serve to press the door into close contact with the wall. A similar arrangement to the lug and bar may be provided at the bottom of the door. The inner face of the door may be lined with any suitable material to provide a fire or gas-proof closure of the door opening. In a modification, the inset portion 15a is replaced by a wheel, rotatably mounted on a vertical pin, secured to the bar 15. Hand-operable means may also be provided to engage with the lug 14 and press the door more firmly on to its seat when the door is closed, the said means according to one construction being in the form of a cam pivotally mounted on the inset portion 15b.
