[Class 130.] The stem of a pipe is constructed of a metal such as aluminium having good heat-conducting properties. As shown in Fig. 2, a wooden or other bowl is screwed into an enlarged portion 13 of a metal stem 2, a metal disc 12 being fitted beneath the bowl which communicates with a chamber 4 through a passage in a screwed nipple 14. A central chamber 5 communicates with the chambers 4 and 8 through passages in members 15 and 9, respectively. The mouthpiece is screwed to the member 9. In the modified construction shown in Fig. 3, the chamber beneath the bowl consists of a spiral groove 20 which terminates in a passage 22 leading to a chamber 23. Extending throughout the full length of the stem the member 9 separates chambers 23, 25 which communicate with one another through passages, not shown. A further modification is shown in Fig. 6 in which smoke passes from the bowl 1 to a chamber 31, enters an aperture 42 in a disc 29, passes around a corrugated member to a chamber 33 and through openings 34, 36 to a chamber 37 from which it issues to a chamber in the mouthpiece. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also describes a modification, Fig. 9 (Cancelled), in which the bowl is fitted with a separate cup-shaped member 2 ; grooves 6 are formed on the inside of the bowl and the smoke passes from the cup member into a chamber at the bottom of the bowl, through a vertical passage to the top groove in the bowl, then through perforations into the succeeding grooves, and finally enters the chamber through a passage 7 and passes around a helical member 8 to the mouthpiece chamber. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
