Abstract

330,249. Haimes, R. March 2, 1929. Mixing of fluids in flow.-In apparatus for washing bottles, glasses, or like articles, wherein the washing is effected by water under pressure isuing from nozzles or jets, disinfecting or sterilized fluid is supplied to the conduit leading from the control valve of the washing apparatus to the nozzles, under the control of means associated with the conduit and adapted to operate automatically so that a small quantity of disinfecting or sterilizing fluid is introduced into the washing liquid at the begininng of each washing operation and is thereafter washed away by the subsequent flow of water during the remainder of the operation. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a chamber 1 containing disinfecting fluid is provided with a valve chamber 3 and a pipe 14 adapted to be connected to the conduit leading to the nozzles of the washing apparatus. The chamber '3 is formed with seats for valves 6, 7, connected by a rod 8 which is normally pressed downwardly by a spring 20. Normally the pipe 14 contains fluid which has flowed from the chamber 3. When the control valve of the apparatus is opened disinfecting fluid in the pipe 14 is at first drawn out to mingle with the water. Subsequently the pressure of the washing liquid forces the rod 8 upwardly holding the valve 7 against its seating 5 until the washing operation is finished and the control valve is closed, whereupon the rod 8 is pressed downwardly by the spring 20 permitting the release of a further small quantity of fluid from the container 1. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, in which a glass 18 to be washed is placed upon a depressible platform 19 connected to a control valve 20, the platform is carried by a tube 23 which is slotted vertically to receive the end of a valve chamber 27 adapted to communicate with the supply of disinfecting liquid. A cylinder 82 fixed in the tube 23 is arranged to co-operate with a plunger 31 carried by the tube 23, the plunger being formed with a passage 33 adapted to be closed by a ball valve 34. Normally a small quantity of disinfecting fluid is contained below the plunger. When the platform 19 is depressed this fluid is forced upwardly past the ball valve 34 and mingles with the flow of washing water to the nozzles 22. When the washing operation is completed the. platform 19 rises taking with it the plunger 31 so that suction below the plunger causes the ball valve 37 to move from its seating allowing disinfecting fluid to flow into the space beneath the plunger. The invention may be used in conjunction with the apparatus described in Specification 309,878. [Class 138 (i), Washing and cleaning buildings &c.].
