336,935. Commercial Alcohol Co., Ltd., Arthur, J. S., and Gogarten, R. April 20, 1929. Glucose &c.-Decomposition products such as polyoses and monoses are made, from cellulose or cellulose-containing materials by treating the starting material, having a moisture content adjusted by drying or steaming so as not to exceed 50 per cent, with a volatile acid gas such as hydrochloric or hydrofluoric acid gas under cooling to low temperatures, preferably below 0‹ C., and saccharifying the decomposed material without previous removal of the acid by a mixture of steam and acid gas at about 60-75‹ C. The material is partially de-acidified and treated with steam under pressure to convert the sugars to monoses, or boiled with acidified water. Liquefied hydrochloric acid may be used to secure cooling during the treatment of the starting material. An example of the treatment of sawdust is given. Specification 292,919 is referred to.
