Abstract

335,567. Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., and Saunders, K. H. March 26, 1929. Chemical processes; mercaptobenzothiazole.- Reactions are carried out continuously in the liquid phase under increased pressure by introducing the liquid or liquids under treatment into a reaction chamber whence on completion of the reaction the liquid overflows into a second chamber disposed in the reaction chamber and is drawn off. The mercaptobenzothiazole is prepared by introducing a solution of sulphur in carbon disulphide mixed with aniline oil into a reaction vessel heated to 200-275‹ C. and under pressure, and allowing the mixture on completion of the reaction to overflow into a second chamber disposed in the reaction chamber, whence it is drawn off. Referring to the diagram equal volumes of a saturated solution of sulphur in carbon disulphide and aniline are pumped through the tubes E and D to mix in tube F and enter the pressure-sustaining vessel A, heated to 200- 275‹ at G. The reaction is complete by the time the mixture rises to the top of the tube C into which it then overflows and is withdrawn through the valve I. The pressure is observed by the gauge J and regulated by the valve K. The valve L may be used to empty and clean the annulus. The preparation of ethylaniline and p-nitraniline according to the present process is also mentioned. Specification 329,260, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], is referred to.
