Abstract

Hygrometric apparatus.-The moisture content of a substance such as flour is determined by mixing the substance in a closed vessel with a substance such as calcium carbide so as to produce a gas, and measuring the pressure of the gas produced. The vessel 1 in which the gas is generated has a ground upper edge which is closed by a cover 2 with an interposed rubber washer. The cover 2 is pressed into engagement by a screw 6 passing through a stirrup 3 into the base 4 of which the vessel 1 fits. A pressure gauge 8 is mounted on the cover 2. Weighed quantities of the substance to be tested and of calcium carbide &c. are introduced into the vessel and are thoroughly mixed by agitating the apparatus, and the pressure is read at the end of a given time interval from the commencement of the mixing operation. The gauge may be graduated to give a direct reading of the moisture content.
