323,939. Sinclair, J. A. Jan. 25, 1929. Tobacco. - Tobacco twist is covered with a spiral wrapping of paper or of paper substitute such as cellulose film material. In order to give a smooth or glossy appearance to the twist, a glazed paper or transparent material may be employed, and may remain on the twist for, say 24 hours, and then be removed. The twist may be coiled or sold in straight lengths. In the apparatus shown, tobacco is fed to spinning rollers 2 from a table 1 on which the tobacco is rolled by hand in a leaf covering. The rollers 2 comprise sections which are moved to the right, while in contact with the tobacco, by cams 3, 4, and a paper wrapping is delivered from a roll in a holder 19 and thence under a spring-pressed plate 20 lying over a flanged guide 21. The gummed edge of the paper is moistened by a roller 27 running in a water trough 28. The covered twist passes between drawing rollers 6, 7 carried by a spinning frame 5 which rotates about the longitudinal axis of the machine. The upper roller 6 is driven through a belt 8 and gears 15, 16, and the roller 7 through a belt 9, the belt pulleys being driven through bevel and spur gearing 10 - -13. From the rollers 6, 7 the twist passes through a tube 15a, a central bore in the driving pulleys 17, a tube 30 heated electrically to dry the adhesive, and tubes 31, 34, between which is arranged a hand-operated oblique-edged cutter sliding transversely for cutting the twist into lengths. If the twist is not to be sold in lengths in a wrapped condition, the rollers 6, 7 and heating and cutting mechanism are dispensed with, and a coiling bobbin is mounted in the spinning frame 5. The bobbins are stored for, say, 24 hours, and the twist is then coiled into small rolls, the paper wrapping being removed.
