Cellulose carboxylates.-Mixed cellulose esters of acetic acid and butyric acid are obtained from cellulose treated wth acetic acid as described in Specification 237,567 by further treatment with normal butyric anhydride, isobutyric anhydride, or their mixtures in presence of an esterification catalyst with or without a diluent, and with or without a solvent of the cellulose ester to be obtained, e.g. butyric acid or benzene. As catalyst may be used the catalysts used in the manufacture of cellulose acetate e.g. sulphuric acid,. aliphatic or aromatic sulphonio acids, or zinc chloride. In examples, moist hydrocellulose is stirred with glacial acetic acid and is then esterified by stirring with butyric anhydride, butyric acid and zinc chloride or sulphuric acid. In other examples, cellulose is stirred with glacial acetic acid and then esterified in a bath of butyric anhydride, methane sulphonic acid and benzene; or butyric anhydride and p-toluene sulphonic acid; or butyric acid, butyric anhydride, methane sulphonic acid, and zinc chloride; or butyric acid, butyric anhydride, methane sulphonic acid, and sulphuric acid. The products obtained by this method are soluble in cold benzene and are suitable for the manufacture of films, artificial threads, varnishes, or masses similar to celluloid.
