Abstract
329,811. Archer, C. F. May 4, 1929. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing. - In epicyclic variablespeed toothed and friction gearing .for use in pulley-blocks &c. a gyrating driving wheel, the eccentricity of which is variable, gears internally with a driven wheel on a fixed axis, which wheel is thus driven at a variable speed in reverse direction. The driving-wheel A', Fig. 4, is linked to the frame by two pairs of links R, U and is adjustably connected to a disc A loose on an eccentric sleeve K, itself adjustable on an eccentric portion L of the driving-shaft M, so that the eccentricity of the wheel A<1> may be varied. By axial adjustment of the wheel A<1>, its effective diameter is changed according to its eccentricity in order to maintain effective engagement between teeth E on the wheel A<1> and a rubber ring I<1> secured on the driven wheel F. In a modification, a cylindrical spur driven wheel is engaged by a rubber ring on the driving wheel, the rubber being compressed to a greater or less degree as the eccentricity is varied. Fig. 5 shows a variant of this form, in which the driving wheel A is connected to the framing by a Hookes-joint connection c, d, &c., and is carried looselv on a sleeve a formed interiorly rectilinear to slide on a squared part of the driving shaft M under the control of a wedge X adjusted by a wedge-ended pin Y. The driving-teeth E engage a rubber ring I' on the driven member F.
