Abstract

329,159. Ashcroft, E. A., and Elmore, F. E. Feb. 26, 1929. Extracting.-Metals are extracted by causing hydrogen or a mixture of steam and hydrogen or steam and hydrogen in succession to bubble through a molten and freely mobile bath consisting of or containing the compound to be reduced. Iron chloride may be melted and maintained at a temperature between 600-850‹ centigrade while hydrogen in excess is bubbled through and the process may be made continuous by washing out the hydrochloric acid gas and recirculating the excess hydrogen. Metals, e.g. iron, which are non-molten at the temperature of the molten compound employed are obtained in granular form. A metal with a low melting point may be employed to collect a metal with a higher melting point into alloy with itself; e.g. lead, tin or zinc may be employed to collect silver, gold, platinum, copper, nickel or iron. The heating of the melt is preferably effected electrically. Specifications 17666/11 and 302,851, [both in Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.], are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 7353/89 and 193,475.
