Abstract
328,066. Smith, P. S. D., (Crane Packing Co.). Feb. 9, 1929. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Fluid-tightness between a condenser tube 11, Fig. 1, and the tube plate 10 is secured by a fibre &c. bushing 14 which is located within the usual screwthreaded enlarged portion 13 of the plate hole and is compressed by expanding the tube end into engagement therewith along its entire length. 'The bushing may be provided with metal slugs 15 as shown to bond electrically the tube to the tube plate, or a metallic packing ring may be secured to the inner end thereof, while the end of the tube is preferably flared to confine positively the bushing 14 within the recess 13. Fig. 4 shows a tube expanded at one end against a fibre bushing 19, having a metallic packing ring 20 as above, and with the other end surrounded by alternate metal and fibre rings 21, 22, respectively, which are swaged or expanded by light hammer blows to engage the screw-threads of the plate hole.
