Abstract

327,775. Grayson, J. H. Jan. 21, 1929. Thermostats.-A valve 19 for controlling the flow of fluids, particularly the gas supply to a water heater, oven, or the like, is thermally actuated by a rod-and-tube type thermostat 5, 6, and is provided with a snap action. The valve stem 23 is sleeved over the moving element 5 of the thermostat, the end of the valve stem being in close proximity to a dished diaphragm or metal disc 30 through which the rod 5 passes freely. The edge of the diaphragm is freely supported in a recess in the valve casing, the face nearest the valve bearing against a shoulder 31, whilst a block 35 having a projecting face of the form shown in Fig. 3 bears against the opposite face of the diaphragm, the circle of contact being located near the free edge of the diaphragm. The block 35 is secured to the rod 5, a shoulder on the rod bearing against the block as the tube 6 contracts until the diaphragm " clicks " past its neutral position, thereby opening the valve, with a snap action against the pressure of a spring 26, the valve closing automatically when the temperature has risen sufficiently to cause the tube 6 to expand until the rod 5 has moved the block 35 far enough to allow the valve to seat. Adjustment of the valve opening may be effected by a lever 12 secured to the end of the rod 5, the opposite end of the rod being threaded into a screwed plug 10 fixed in the end of the tube, the lever 12 moving over a calibrated dial. A bye-pass 18 provides for the gas supply to a pilot light.
