Abstract

311,319. Vereinigte Stahlwerke Akt.-Ges., and Zimmer, N. May 9, 1928, [Convention date]. Coating-machines.-In the method of coating the interior surfaces of pipes or like hollow bodies in which a paint tank moves past the surface to be coated, and the walls of the tank are partly formed by the surface to be coated, the paint is placed under uniform pressure during the coating operation, by the front closing wall of the tank, which is permitted to .approach the rear closing wall of the tank by friction against the surface to be coated. To avoid loss of paint, the apparatus is advanced before and after painting into bodies corresponding in shape to the articles painted. A preferred form of device comprises a pulling rod 5, Fig. 1, provided with a projection 6 against which a disc 7 and a cup-shaped pressed leather cuff 8 are pressed by a member 9, spring 10, and nut 11. The cuff 8 forms the rear closing wall of the device. A guide 12 slides on the rod 5, and screwed to it is a pressure disc 13. A leather cuff 15, forming the front closing wall of the device, is pressed against the disc 13 by a disc 16 and nut 17. Thin steel plates 19 and 20 are provided to increase the flexibility of the leather cuffs 8 and 15. Fig. 1 shows the device, together with a sleeve 1, in its filling position. The sleeve 1 is conical, having a diameter d<1> smaller and a diameter d<2> larger than the pipe to be painted, the larger ends bearing against the ends of the pipes to be painted. The space between the cuffs is filled with paint, and the device is then drawn fully into the sleeve as shown in Fig. 2, the position of the front closing wall remaining unchanged. Fig. 3 shows the apparatus ready to paint, two pipes 22, 23, sleeves 1<1> and 1<11> being mounted against the end of pipe 22. The device is drawn through pipe 22 and received in sleeve 1<11>. The sleeves are then moved in the direction of the arrows and pipe 23 is painted by moving the device in the opposite direction. Plant, arrangement of.-Figs. 4 and 5 show a plant serving for the continuous painting of pipes, Fig. 4 being a plan and Fig. 5 an elevation. Supply and discharge grates 26 and 27 for unpainted and painted pipes; moveable standards 28 for mounting the sleeves 1; drawing devices 29 for pulling the painting device in both directions; and paint tanks 30 for replenishing the painting device are provided. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the uniform pressure on the paint being produced by the action of a spring. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
