Abstract

311,055. Freedman, P., and Rickets, W. J. March 29, 1928. Television. - Substances possessing piezoelectric properties, and also in some cases the property of rotating the plane of polarization of light, are produced artificially from a dielectric material, preferably one with a high dielectric constant, and comprise a multiplicity of suitably orientated hemihedral crystals in close juxtaposition or embedded in a suitable medium. The dielectric may be composed wholly or partly of one or more waxes, hydrogenated fats or oils, or natural resins, either separately or mixed in suitable proportions ; or it may be composed partly of celluloid, vitreous material, or the like. Hemihedral crystal structure is obtained by incorporating one or more optically operative bodies, such as zinc oxide, neutral sulphates of cinchonine, or ouprein, dicamphahexandion, and dicamphahexandionperoxide or the optically-active substances present in the oils and resins can be relied upon. Crystal orientation is obtained (1) by depositing the crystals from a liquid under the influence of an electric field or (2) by depositing the crystals on an electrode from an electrolyte solution or (3) by precipitation from a saturated solution on cooling or evaporation or on addition of a precipitating agent or (4) by a mechanical process such as repeated rolling of the crystalline body. The artificial crystal may be used as a light interrupter in television and like systems.
