Abstract

317,703. Waterworth, E. N. May 25, 1928. Divided on 317,895. Magazine gramophones; returning tone-arm to starting- position.-In a magaz i n e gramophone, mechanism is provided whereby, after a record has been changed, the tone-arm is moved by a cam or like member so that the needle rests on the edge of the record, and a further member is then moved by frictional engagement with the tonearm or with a member carried thereby, so that the needle is gently urged into the sound-groove. The invention is shown as applied to a machine similar to that described in Specification 300,814. At the end of the playing of a record, a wheel 39 makes one revolution and causes a lever 41 to oscillate. This lever carries a bar 43, which effects the raising of the tone-arm 24 through a member 45, and also carries a pivoted plate 48 which, by engagement with a pin 49 on a plate 50 rigid with the tone-arm, moves the tone-arm outwardly. After a fresh record has been placed on the turntable, for example by mechanism as described in Specification 317,895, the tone-arm is moved inwards until the needle is over the edge of the record, and is then lowered. This inward movement is caused by the action of the edge of the plate 48 on a pin 75 on the plate 50, the action ceasing when the edge of the member 48 brushes past the pin. The extent of inward movement is suited to the size of the record on the turntable, and is determined by the automatic setting of the plate 48 under the control of a stop 76. This stop is linked to a platform 8 which supports the pile of records (not shown), and as the platform is set so that it supports either a ten-inch or a twelve-inch record, so will he stop 76 be set in either of the two positions which govern the appropriate action of the cam 48. When the wheel 39 has nearly completed a revolution, a stud 102 thereon rocks a spring-controlled lever 80. This lever has pivoted upon it an arm 82, an edge 104 of which is formed with two notches 108, and lightly bears, under spring action, against a stud 105 on the plate 50. As the arm 82 moves forward through the action of the pin 102, one of the notches 108 engages the stud 105, and the frictional drag thus exerted moves the tone-arm further inwards until the needle enters the soundgroove on the record; thereupon the arm 82 is rocked by contact with a stop 106, so that it is then disengaged from the pin 105, and at this stage the wheel 39 stops.
