Formamide is vaporized by bringing it, preferably under reduced pressure, in contact with surfaces heated above its boiling-point so that the formamide is immediately vaporized and no liquid formamide collects in the vaporizer. The formamide mav be injected through a nozzle into a retort heated to 450‹ C., and the vapour may be carried off by a current of gas. The vaporizer may be of copper, iron, or other suitable metals or quartz. Instead of employing a retort, the formamide may be sprayed against a system of coils heated by superheated steam or hot liquids or against hot rotary rolls or drums. If the vaporizer is of iron, the vapour will contain some hydrocyanic acid, which is an advantage when it is to be used for the production of hydrocyanic acid.
