Abstract

301,556. Allan, H. B. Aug. 6, 1927. Exhaust silenccrs.-In a silencer particularly applicable to motor cycle engines, ihe exhaust pipe adjacent the cylinder 2 is curved downwardly at 1 and is extended as a straight converging portion 3 substantially parallel to the ground. At 5 the circular section changes to rectangular and the outlet end 6 extends into an expansion chamber 7 whence a perforated pipe 8 leads to a fishtail discharge orifice 11. The outlet end of the pipe 6 may be fitted with one or more valves. For example, the end may be cut with bevelled faces 13, Fig. 2, to form seats for two flap valves 14 hinged on knife edges and connected by wires 18 to loading springs 19 anchored at 20 to the expansion chamber. The valves are normally held half open and their outward movements are limited by stop plates 16. After a blast of exhaust gases has passed into the chamber 7 the valves 14 automatically close. As modifications, (1) the valves 14 may be dished &c. to increase their stiffness, (2) valves other than the flap type may be employed, (3) the valves may be mechanically actuated from the engine, (4) the valves may be dispensed with, (5) the exhaust pipe may be of circular or of rectangular section throughout, (6) baffle-plates may be arranged in the expansion chamber.
