Abstract

301,472. Manzolini, E., Capobianco, V., and Scarponi, F. Nov. 30, 1927, [Convention date]. Projectiles; fuzes.-Relates to percussion fuzes adapted to act on impact in any direction, and consists mainly of the use of a liquid or pulverulent material the flow or deformation of which under the shock of impact causes the fuze to operate. As shown in Fig. 1, a grenade 1 contains a loose explosive charge 14 carrying a percussion cap 15, and on this is fitted a charge of shot 2 behind a piston 4 carrying the firing pin 6. The firing pin and the percussion cap are held apart by a spring 12 and by two pins 7, 10. The pin 7 is hinged at 8 to a ring 9 embracing the grenade or fuze body, and the ring 9 is locked in place by the pin 10 which is provided with a finger ring 11. In use, the pin 10 is first pulled out by the ring 11; the grenade is then thrown, and during flight the ring 9 and pin 7 fall off, but the firing pin and percussion cap are still kept apart by the spring 12. On impact, the firing pin and the cap are brought together by the momentum of the shot charge 2 or of the bursting charge 14, or by the deformation of the shot charge 2, or by a combination of these actions, according to the direction of impact. For a projectile, the percussion cap 15 is carried by a loose heavy tube instead of by the bursting charge, and only one safety pin is used, secured by a safety device outside the body of the fuze.
