Abstract
300,529. Kobiolke, A. M. Aug. 9, 1927, Disinfecting-chambers.-Insect and other pests in food &c. materials are destroyed by treatment in a hermetically sealed kiln 1 from which the air is first withdrawn by a pump 13, any oxygen remaining being removed by introducing carbon monoxide from a charcoal burner 37 by opening a valve 40. This carbon monoxide is withdrawn by evacuation and fumigating gas or vapour is introduced, e.g. by opening a valve 36 carbon bisulphide vapour is drawn into the kiln from a carbon bisulphide container 32 which may have a steam coil fed from a boiler 16 to assist vaporization . Heat may be supplied to the kiln by steam coils 14, 15 to assist the action of the fumigant. When the treatment is completed, the fumigant is removed by evacuation, and air is circulated through the kiln to cleanse the material thoroughly. Fans 5 communicating with the top and bottom of the kiln by pipes 2, 3, 6. 7, 7<a>, 8 may be provided for circulating the atmosphere in the kiln. The material may be passed into the kiln on trucks 26<a> running on rails 28. The kiln 1 may have insulated walls 21, and may have on each side a gutter 22 to collect condensed moisture which is run off through pipes 23, having a control valve 26, to a hermetically sealed bottle 24 disposed in a pit 25.
