Abstract

306,566. Smith, S. C. Oct. 21, 1927. Treating ores to remove undesired constituents. -Platinum concentrates are obtained from ores carrying also nickel, copper, and iron by first producing a sulphide matte; desulphurizing by roasting, with or without first Bessemerizing; reducing the roasted matte to produce a metal sponge, with or without a previous acid leach to remove the bulk of the copper and it may be some nickel and cobalt; and extraction of the sponge with dilute acid to dissolve nickel and iron and to leave the platinum group metals generally admixed with copper. The steps of roasting, leaching, reduction, and leaching may be repeated. Reduction may be effected by carbon in a muffle furnace, or by reducing gases, hydrogen, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and alcohol vapour being instances in the Provisional Specification. In an example, coal gas is specified. Specification 296,744 is referred to.
