Discharging.-Apparatus for feeding fuel to furnaces, but applicable to discharging lime kilns comprises a hopper 10 delivering into a shovel box 11 at the bottom of which is an oscillating shovel 12 having driving gear adapted ' to yield to prevent breakage in the event of the shovel being obstructed. The shovel is arcuate in form and mounted on radial arms pivoted at 23. It is oscillated by a link 15 pivoted to a block 17 adapted to slide on an arm 18 pivoted at 19 and driven by a link 25 connected to a motor through reducing mechanism. The block 17 carries a weight 31 mounted on a rod 29 slidable in a block 30 movable about the axis 19. The weight is sufficiently heavy to insure the shovel operating under normal conditions but will yield upwardly in the event of an obstruction preventing movement of the shovel. To prevent gases from escaping through the shovel box, a pivoted gate 33 is provided and actuated simultaneously with the shovel from the pivoted arm 18 and connected thereto by links 37 and telescopic arms 38 adapted to yield against the action of springs thereon if the gate becomes clogged. An adjustable hinged flap 49 serves to regulate the size of the throat of the shovel box which may deliver through the shoot 54 bolted thereto or to a horizontal tubular member 65, Fig. 6. The bottom of the member 65 carries a notched reciprocating feeder 66 actuated from the arm 18. A damper-controlled aperture 73 admits air to the member 65 for cooling purposes. The apparatus shown in Fig. 6 is suspended bv hangers 75. To prevent access of material to the edges of the shovel, the box is provided at the sides with channels 59, Fig. 4, with which engage lips 60 on the shovel. The cross sectional area of the shovel box is reduced at its bottom when small amounts of material are to be delivered by filler blocks 61 secured to the walls by screws 62.
