Brushes; brush-holders.-To prevent the entry of foreign matter between a brush and its brushbox and so preclude scouring action and maintain good contact between the brush and box, the contacting surfaces of the brush or box or of both are made with the grooves or spaces in which the dust &c. lodges and from which it may escape by openings to the outer air. Fig. 1, shows a brush having on its lateral faces grooves 15 disposed at an angle of about 60‹ to the horizon and terminating in vertical ducts 15a on two faces of the brush in herring-bone manner. Alternative forms of grooving, such as wavy, linear or chequered channels, may be used or the surfaces may be otherwise provided with raised areas and interspersed depressions. The brushbox may be similarly grooved, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, where diagonal grooves 33 in the inside surfaces of the box 30 communicate with vertical channels 34 at the corners and with outlet ducts 35 pierced through the walls of the box. Such a box may be used with an ordinary brush or one provided with similar grooves &c. as previously described.
