Abstract

292,131. Vogel, A. June 14, 1926, [Convention date]. Electrodes; iron and other metallic oxides. obtaining; electric endosmose.-In cells for the electrolysis of water a cathode is provided with a colloidal or finely divided coating of a metal of the iron group or a compound thereof in order to prevent the development of excess voltages in working. The electrode may be first roughened or provided with a wire gauze covering to improve the adhesion of the coating. The coating substance may be introduced into the electrolyte; it is then deposited cataphoretically on the cathode during electrolysis. The material may be formed by preliminary anodic oxidation of the electrode material e.g. iron, the electrode being thereafter permanently connected as cathode and the oxide deposited thereon. The working anode may be of nickel.
