Abstract

Magnetic measurements.-The hardness of a metallic article, such as a ball-bearing ring, is measured by measuring its effect on the reluctance of a magnetic circuit, of which it is arranged to form apart. The article 1 to be tested closes the magnetic circuit of an electromagnet 2, the windings 3 of which are in series with the secondary winding 6 of a step-down transformer and with an adjustable resistance 7 across which is connected a voltmeter 10. The reading of the voltmeter 10 is a measure of the current flowing in the coils 3, which is dependent on the reluctance of the magnetic circuit and therefore on the hardness of the article 1. The transformer 5, 6 has a saturated core, which renders the apparatus independent of fluctuations of supply voltages.
