Abstract

298,726. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Aug. 10, 1927. Hydrogen; nitrogen.-The removal of catalyst poisons, moisture and other impurities from gases is effected by treating them with reactive metals dissolved or finely distributed in melts of salts, oxides, hydroxides, or other metals. The process is preferably conducted under pressure. Means may be provided for recovering any of the reactive metal which is carried away by the gas. Catalysts may be added to accelerate the purifying reaction. Impurities which may be removed are sulphur and oxygen in the free or combined state, particularly hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide, water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbon oxysulphide, halogens and their compounds, carbonyls, phosphoretted hydrogen, arseniuretted hydrogen and cyanogen compounds. Suitable reactive metals are the alkali and alkaline earth metals, lead, cadmium, tin, bismuth. In an example, a nitrogen-hydrogen mixture is treated with sodium and a little iron in a melt of caustic soda.
