Abstract
296,355. Soc. of Chemical Industry in Basle, and Andriessens, H. Aug. 29, 1927, [Convention date]. Hydrocyanic acid.-In treating gaseous mixtures containing methane, nitrogen and hydrogen in a flaming are to produce hydrocyanic acid and acetylene, the gases leaving the arc are treated to separate the hydrocyanic acid and a part at least of the acetylene before being returned to the arc. Sufficient acetylene is separated to prevent the formation of soot by the action of the arc. The gas circuit described in Specification 195,239 may be used. Hydrocyanic acid may be absorbed in alkali, and acetylene by water under pressure or by active charcoal. Hydrogen may be separated from the residual gases before return to the arc by diffusion, partial combustion &c. In place of methane, petroleum vapour or its constituents may be used.
