Tobacco.-In a machine for recovering tobacco from imperfect cigarettes, each cigarette is conveyed beneath a rotary knife 4 arranged to slit the paper, which is opened out by suction, and the tobacco is removed by a rotating brush 5. As shown, the cigarettes are conveyed by a belt 6 to a groove 2 in the flange 7 of a wheel 1 rotating over a suction chamber 8. Passages 9 in the flange communicate with the chamber 8, so that the slit paper is opened out by suction. The tobacco is collected in a box 10 and the paper in a box 11. In a modification, the cigarettes are conveyed beneath the slitting knife by a belt passing through a U-shaped channel provided with grooves and a central channel communicating with a suction chamber, the suction being communicated through the grooves and the belt. An inclined plate sweeps the long shreds of tobacco into a box and the remaining short tobacco and dust are removed by a rotary brush, falling with the paper into a container or a rotary sieve, or the paper may be deposited in a separate container as before.
