Abstract
281,777. Ord, L. C. Sept. 10, 1926. Drilling-machines. -- In a drilling or like machine, the work e together with a templet or copy f is mounted on a compound tab.e, and the templet is associated with a plunger member i which, when inserted into a hole or depression in the templet automatically sets into operation the feed of the drill or other tool c. The templet, which is supported on the table portion d, may be a finished work piece or a copy thereof in sheel, metal supported on a wooden backing, and the work and templet may each be located by means of gauge strips and secured by clamps. The plunger i may be depressed by a hand lever k so that it enters a hole in the templet and the corresponding hole in the work piece is then drilled automatically. The drill feed may be actuated in the manner described in Specification 237,979 or by other electric, pneumatic, hydraulic, or mechanical connections. One electric motor may be used to cause the rapid approach of the tool to the work and a second motor to operate the drill when resistance is encountered. Preferably, the lever k coacts with contacts k<1> and when the plunger is depressed, the circuit of an electromagnet l is completed, thus bringing a lever n into engagement with the feed cam m and simultaneously opening a valve o to release air above the piston in a cylinder p. A weight q then rotates the cam to feed the drill up to the work. over-running the power feed (not shown) which comes into operation when resistance is encountered in a manner similar to' that described in Specification 237,979. When the plunger k is lifted the circuit of the electromagnet is broken and the parts return to their initial position, the weight q being lifted by the admission of air to the cylinder p. In some cases a number of tools may be employed either of similar kind. or consisting of varying sized drills or drilling. reaming, tapping, facing or like tools. In the former case the table is divided into the required number of sections in which a number of work pieces are mounted and all the drills are actuated simultaneously from a single plunger to drill the correspending hole in each work piece. If different tools are employed, Fig. 5, each tool is associated with its own plunger and the plungers may be of different sizes to facilitate operation. In another form, Fig. 6, the drilling-head is iitted with a number of tools, which may be brought selectively into operation, the control being effected by a single plunger. In addition to controlling the feed of the drill the plunger acts as a lock to prevent movement of the work table during operation. In some cases. a sheet of white paper or other material may be arranged on one side of the machine and may coact with a pointer which replaces the plunger, the pointer being located accurately by screw adjustments against markings on the paper to drill the required holes in the work. In this case, supplementary locking means are provided for holding the table in position during the operation.
