Abstract

Moulding confectionery and balls; endless-chain machines; extrusion machines. - Chocolate articles are formed under pressure by forcing semi-plastic chocolate into a normally unvented mould 30, and relieving pressures above a predetermined maximum in said mould to permit complete filling under pressure. A plurality of moulds 30, Figs. 1 and 4, are adapted to be moved intermittently on an endless chain 10, and when beneath the filling nozzles 26 are adapted to be lifted against the same. The lifting means consists of elevators 32 and guide rods 34, which are slidable on an elevator bar 37, and springs 38, surrounding the rods 34, serve to raise the moulds when the bar 37 is lifted by rods 39. Feed cylinders 18 are connected by passages with a chocolate reservoir 14, and such cylinders have pistons 20 actuated by a bar 22 through rods 24. The moulds 30 comprise a base portion 40 having core members 42 on its upper face, and a corresponding upper portion 50 having a rim 51, which is slotted to receive clamp studs 45 pivoted on the base member. Springs 47 mounted on the ends of the studs 45 bear on discs 48 engaging brackets 52 on the rim 51 of the upper member. Pins 49 on the lower member engage positioning apertures on the other member. The recessed members 54 on the upper mould portion 50 have openings 55, which may be reinforced by rings 56 forming seats for the nozzles 26 during filling. The rings 56 also serve tc support a bar 60, having clamping means 61, 62, and such device provides for the correct positioning of tubes 64 for supporting handles 70 for the chocolate cups. During moulding, the pressure within the mould rises as the chocolate enters and causes between the mould members a slight opening, which releases the pressure and allows completion of the filling operation. The mechanism for depressing the pistons 20 is arranged to operate only when the moulds 30 have been pressed upward against the nozzles. The chocolate article consists of a cup 73, Fig. 8, having a boss 75, and a handle 70 of wood &c. The cup may be employed for containing ice cream &c. 77, and is adapted to have a highly polished surface.
