Fixed sieves; rotary sieves; sieves with compound motion. - Apparatus for cleaning grain by the removal of beards, hulls, foreign seeds and water, comprises a rotary screen which is mounted for universal movement at one end and is actuated by an eccentric at the other end, so as to have simultaneous jogging and rotary movements. In the apparatus described, the grain is fed into a frustoconical chamber 12, the bottom half 14 of which is formed of perforated sheet or other mesh material. A drum 20 with helical flights 26 is mounted within the chamber 12 on a shaft 22 and advances the grain to the shoot at the same time removing beards and hulls and forcing the small impurities through the sieve 14. The position of the drums 20 in the chamber is adjusted axially by means of the hand-wheel 34 acting on the bearing sleeve 31 to which the shaft 22 is secured so as to allow rotary, but not endwise, movement. The materials passing through the sieve 14 are delivered by the conveyer 46 and shoot 50 into the chamber 51 containing the rotary sieve 55. The grain passing from the chamber 12 is subjected to further cleaning action in the interior of the sieve 55. which is preferably of frusto-conical shape and has at one end a universal connection to a hollow shaft 62 and at the other end a strap 66 actuated by an eccentric on a shaft 63. The shafts 62, 63 are driven independently from the main shaft 41 through suitable chain and sprocket gearing. A screw-conveyer 76 discharges the materials passing through the sieve 55, while the cleaned grain discharges into the shoot 80.
