Abstract
287,569. Chaligne, R. G. March 24, 1927, [Convention date]. Swimming and bathing appliances.-A swimming apparatus comprises, in combination, handles 10 and pedals 20 for transmitting motion to a propeller 15 by the simultaneous action of the arms and legs of a swimmer. The handles 10 and pedals 20 are oppositely arranged in order to facilitate the complete extension of the limbs of the swimmer. The body of the apparatus comprises two elliptical tubular members 1, 2 which are relatively adjustable, and are clamped in position by a clamping band 4 and are rendered watertight by a rubber sleeve surrounding the joint. Within these members a similar driving shaft is coupled at either end through universal joints and pinion gears to the shafts 8 and 17. All the shafts are mounted in ball bearings, and compartments are provided at either end for housing the pinion gears which are filled with oil. Lateral floats 32 and a central float 33 stabilize the apparatus and increase its buoyancy. These floats can be deflated when the apparatus is telescoped to its shortest length for transport. The apparatus can be adjusted to the length of any operator.
