Extracting; purifying and refining.-In a process for producing synthetic pig iron, pure sponge iron is prepared by reducing iron ore and separating the gangue from the iron, and is melted with the addition of a substantially pure carbonaceous material such as charcoal, petroleum coke, or anthracite in an electric furnace under acid conditions and at a temperature of 1100-1300‹ C. Silicon or manganese or both may be added to the molten bath in the necessary quantities to obtain the desired grade of pig iron. In an example if a pig iron containing 4.0 per cent of carbon is to. be produced, 1000 kg. of pure sponge iron and 54.2 kg. of carbonaceous material is melted in an electric furnace at a temperature of about 1200‹ C. If a silicon content of 1 per cent is desired in the pig iron, 25.6 kg. of ferro-silicon containing 40 per cent of silicon is added to the bath.
