Abstract

284,337. Br÷ms, C. O. J. Jan. 29, 1927, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Moulds.-Chilled rolls are cast from two qualities of metal, the non-chilled portion being cast after the requisite thickness has solidified in the chill. Metal is supported by a gate 1, Fig. 1, to cast the clutch end of the roll and fill the bottom sand section of the mould to the level 13. Chilling metal is then supplied to fill the mould to the level 14. After the required thickress 9 has solidified in the chill 3, further non-chilling metal is supplied to fill the mould the chilling-metal that has not solidified being displaced over a lip 5 to a ladle 6. In a modification the gate 1 enters the mould at the bottom, two pourings only are required, the first being of chilled metal. In this case the clutch end is formed to shape by machining. In a further modification in addition to the gate 1 either or both of the gates 16, 17, Fig. 4, are provided these being fitted with stoppers 18. Chilling metal is supplied at 1 after the part solidification the stoppers are removed and the molten metal remaining is run out, non chilling metal being subsequently supplied. In a further modification in addition to the gate 1 a gate similar to 16 is provided closed by a stopper rod passing through the mould. In this modification the quantity of molten metal removed from the mould is reduced.
