Abstract
271,884. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. May 25, 1926, [Convention date]. Anthraquinonyl-alpha-ketones are obtained by oxidizing benzanthrones or substitution products thereof, substituted by an aryl group in the benzene ring. According to examples, the oxidation is effected with chromic acid in glacial acetic acid and the following ketones are obtained :-(1) alphabenzoylanthraquinone from Bz1-phenylbenzanthrone (Specification 268,830); (2) anthraquinonealpha-benzil (diphthaloylbenzil) from Bz1 : Bz1<1>-dibenzanthronyl; (3) monophthaloylbenzil (M.Pt. 181‹ C.) from Bz1-hydroxy-Bz2-phenylbenzanthrone (made according to example 16 of Specification 268,083; compounds (2) and (3) are darkened by exposure to light, but if in the latter case the oxidation is not carried so far, a compound of M.Pt. 237‹ C. is produced which is not sensitive to light.
