Abstract

278,083. Marks, E. C. R., (Cameron Machine Co.). June 30, 1925. Winding webs.-In a web-winding apparatus, particularly for winding paper as it is delivered from a paper-making machine, the winding-shaft is initially mounted in a support which carries it into contact with a winding-drum and cooperating abutment and is then transfefrred to a device which supports it during the completion of the winding and then delivers the roll on to a support. In one form, Fig. 1, the web 39 passes round the winding drum 10 to a winding-shaft 19, which, during the initial portion of the winding of the roll, is supported out of contact with the drum 10 and in engagement with a winding- roller 14 driven by a belt 15. The shaft 19 is carried in rectangular blocks 21 mounted in open slots 20 in arms 17 mounted on pivots 18 and normally resting against stops 24. The rollers 21 are a loose fit in the slots 20 and are prevented from dropping to the bottom of the slots by engaging shoulders 25 in one side 22 of the slots. When the desired amount of material has been wound the arms 17 are swung about their pivots 18 until the roll is in the main winding position 19 in which it is in contact with the drum 10 and an abutment in the form of a second winding drum 11. During this movement the blocks leave the shoulders 25 and engage the opposite sides 23 of the slots 20 so that they are free to move downwardly until the roll engages the drums 10, 11. As the material accumulates, the blocks 21 leave the slots 20 and the arms 17 are then returned to receive a new winding shaft. As the roll increases in diameter, the blocks enter guides 29 on arms 27 mounted on pivots 28. The arms 27, 17 have gear sectors 34, 33 connected by a gear 35 and one of the arms 27 has a gear sector 36 engaged by a pinion 37 on a shaft carrying a hand-wheel 38. When the roll has reached the desired size, the web is severed and the new end attached to the shaft 19 to start the winding of a new roll and the wheel 38 is then operated to swing the arms 27 to the left to carry the shaft 19 of the full roll into engagement with supporting rails 30. On further movement of the arms, the blocks 21 leave the guides 29 and the roll finally rests against a latch 31. Simultaneously with this movement, the new roll is carried by the arms 17 into the main winding position. Feeding belts 40 conduct the web towards the drum 10 and pivoted fingers 43 operated by a hand-lever 45 are provided to raise the free end of the web into contact with the drum 10. In another form, Fig. 3, the pivoted arms 27 are replaced by arms 27 sliding through guides on the arms 17 and formed as racks engaging pinions 55 on a shaft 56 journaled in the arms 17 and provided with a handwheel 57. The arms 17 are operated by a handwheel 50 and pinion 51 engaging a quadrant 52. During the main winding operation, the blocks 21 are held in the upper ends of the arms 27 by latches 59 and the arms are consequently gradually raised. Upon completion of the operation and after the web has been screwed and connected to the new shaft, the hand-wheel 50 is operated to bring the new roll into engagement with the drum 10 and the full roll on to the drum 11, this movement being determined by the engagement of the arms 27a with adjustable stops 60. The arms 27a are then raised to lift the full roll clear of the drum 11 and the stops 60 adjusted to allow the arms 17 to be further turned to bring the full roll above the table 32. When the roll has stopped rotating the stops 60 are further adjusted to allow the new roll to be moved completely with the main winding position, and the full roll to be deposited upon the table 32. The arms 27 are then lowered, and when the bearing blocks 21 are clear of the arms 17a, these arms are returned to their initial position by opening the hand-wheel 50. In another modification, the second winding-drum 11, Fig. 1, is omitted, and instead stationary abutments are provided, against which rounded bearing blocks on the winding-spindle rest until they rise into engagement with abutments on the arms 27. Similarly rounded bearing blocks may be used with a curved abutment replacing the winding-drum 11, Fig. 3; also the preliminary winding may be effected direct from the drum 10. Specification 278,301 is referred to.
