Abstract

277,806. English Electric Co., Ltd., and Chittenden, J. P. Sept. 29, 1926. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; packing, non- metallic.-Carbon packing segments engaging a turbine &c. shaft, or circumferentially grooved segments arranged with clearance around a, shaft, are so arranged that circumferential movement of the segments caused by excessive friction moves the segments radially outwards. A segment 4 may be carried by inclined links 6 having cylindrical ends engaging recesses in the segment and in a stationary ring 2. The segment is pressed inwards by a spring 8 located by a pin 10 engaging a hole in the segment and a slot in the ring 2. The spring 8 may be dispensed with, the links being formed as springs 12, secured by pins 15, and having out-turned ends engaging the segment and the ring 2. The links may be replaced by inclined slots 16 in the segments engaging stationary pins 17. In a modification, the spring 22, which presses the segment inwardly, takes its abutment on a pin 19, the head of which enters a recess 29 when the segment is moved circumferentially against the action of a spring 20. When the packing rings co-operate with the radial surfaces of collars on the shaft, the surfaces of the collars are bevelled, in order that the radial movement of the packing rings may increase the axial clearance.
