Abstract
263,639. Spencer, H. E. Sept. 23, 1925. Filling tubes and like receptacles.-In a machine for making and filling containers, a modified form of mandrel for use in charging liquids or semi-liquids into the containers is shown in Fig. 18. The mandrel 16 contains a tube 39 open at the top to the atmosphere constituting an air passage, and the charge is fed into the annular passage 136 between the mandrel and the tube through a pipe 137. In use, discs 45, 47 are picked up by the mandrel, which descends to the bottom of the container. The bottom of a valve 143, with the washer 45, strikes the bottom of the socket 50 and moves a rod 144 upwards to close the air valve 143 and to lift a charging valve 140 off its seat 139 to allow the charge to flow into the container. The disc 45 is disengaged by the relative movement of the parts and rests at the bottom of the container. The mandrel 16 then rises until a trip causes the air valve to open and the charge valve to close.
