Abstract

267,912. Dupire, A. P. H. March 16, 1926, [Convention date]. Alkalies, chlorine, and hydrogen, obtaining; cells; electrodes; diaphragms; electrolytes, circulating and heating.-A cell for the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solutions comprises a concrete bell 1, Fig. 2, having at its lower end an internal flange 4 below which extend legs which rest on posts 2 provided at the top with insulation 3. The anode, consisting of graphite bars 5, to which a graphite rod 16 is secured by screwing or otherwise, rests on the flange 4, and a diaphragm 6, a perforated or gauze cathode 7 and a shallow vessel 9 are clamped beneath the flange by tie-bars 11 and cross-bars 10, 12. Electrolyte is supplied to the bell by a pipe 21 from a reservoir 20 having, an inlet valve 23 controlled by a rack at the upper end of a float 22. The bell is provided with a gauge 24 and a chlorine outlet 17 and is traversed by a silica tube 18 for the passage of hot water or steam. The cathode compartment is provided with a hydrogen outlet 26 and a siphon 27 for the removal of alkali. A number of cathode chambers may be arranged along the base of a long bell. The bell may consist of vertical sections of fused basalt connected together by a chemically resistant cement and stayed by horizontal tie-bars. In a modification, the cathode and diaphragm are formed with corrugations 30, Fig. 5, within which the anodes 31 are accommodated.
