Abstract
267,696. Pilz, W., and Pilz, J. Feb. 25, 1926. Addressing and like machines; copying documents. -An addressing or like machine employs strips of paper on which the addresses are reproduced in copying or hectographic ink in reversed manner, printing being effected by applying pressure and heat or pressure and moisture. To make an address strip, the addresses are written or typed on a strip of paper under which is placed a sheet of carbon paper with its inked side against the back of the strip, or strips may be made on a duplicating-machine. In one form, the pressure-applying arrangement comprises a roller 1 and a segment 2. The address strip is laid on a table 6 with its end over the roller 1, an envelope 12 to be addressed is placed between guides 13, 13<1> so that it rests on stop fingers 8, and the segment 2 is rotated by turning a handle 5, the stops 8 being then withdrawn by means of a cam 10 acting on an arm 11. After the address is printed, the envelope is released and falls out of the machine. The roller 1 may be heated, or the envelope may be moistened with water, alcohol, acetone, or a mixture of these in which soap is dissolved. In one modification of the arrangement for applying pressure, the roller 1 is a complete cylinder, which is separated from the roller 1 during part of each revolution by means of a cam; in a third, the roller 2 is replaced by a curved plate alternately pressed against and removed from the roller 1; and in a fourth, the roller 1, is replaced by a fixed block, and the roller 2 by a platen, which is actuated by means of toggles.
