Fire-extinguishing by gases; portable pressure reservoirs; sprinklers, automatic and non-automatic. - In an extinguishing system particularly for the engines of cars, &c., a container d for an extinguishing medium under pressure sealed by a disc i is mounted on, and supported by a casing c guiding a piercer h with a piston head j. In a chamber m below the piston f is an explosive cap b<1> from which a fuse h leads to different parts of the engine. In case of fire, the fuse ignites and the explosion of the cap b<1> drives the piercer through the seal i so that the fluid is forced through an outlet. pipe o to spray nozzles above the engine. For hand operation, a striker t is provided. The piston rod f<1> has a coned portion q engaging a seating in the casing c. The container may be detached from the casing c for hand use, in which case the nut j of the container is screwed on to a head guiding a striker and provided with an outlet nozzle.
