Abstract
266,800. Tennant, W. J., (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). Nov. 28, 1925. Hafnium and zirconium phosphates, chlorides, and oxides.-The separation of hafnium and zirconium is effected by fractionally decomposing the complex compounds produced by dissolving the phosphates in a medium containing hydrofluoric acid or a bifluoride, whereby a precipitate of the phosphates is produced in which the proportion of hafnium relatively to zirconium is greater than in the original material. The decomposition is effected by compounds which withdraw fluorine from the complex compounds, suitable substances being concentrated sulphuric acid, boric acid, boron compounds such as borax, boron chloride and boron tri-ethyl ester, zirconium, aluminium and tin salts, compounds of molybdenum, tungsten, chromium, niobium, vanadium, tantalum and beryllium, and the sol of silicic acid. Examples describe the use of ammonium molybdate and of zirconium chloride. In the latter case the zorconium chloride is produced from a portion of the original solution by adding sodium hydroxide to precipitate the oxide. and dissolving this in hydrochloric acid.
