265,206. Montan, Inc., (Assignees of Coolidge, J. R.). Jan. 26, 1926, [Convention date]. Proofing against bacteria and fungi; waterproofing; fireproofing; proofing processes; proofing-compositions.-A process for impregnating wood, fibre board &c. comprises impregnation, preferably under pressure and at a high temperature, with a substance, which easily penetrates the material, followed by impregnation with a wax of high melting point such as montan wax. The substance used in the first operation is preferably an oil miscible with or which dissolves the wax used, and may comprise a toxic agent such as creosote oil or #-naphthol. In the impregnation of wood, after seasoning and preliminary treatment to remove water, the wood is impregnated with a liquid which mixes readily with montan wax, such as carbon tetrachloride, turpentine, kerosine, or petroleum distillate. Preferably the operation is carried out in pressure apparatus. After impregnation, the pressure is reduced to withdraw part of the liquid from the wood. Hot montan wax is then admitted, preferably at a temperature of 225‹-240‹ F., and at a pressure depending on the depth of impregnation desired. The wood may be stored between the two operations. When it is desired to protect the wood from decay, creosote oil, or an inert oil mixed with #-naphthol, is used instead of the solvents mentioned above. In this case, only the outer parts of the wood are impregnated to a depth up to half an inch. #-naphthol may be mixed with the montan wax when the first impregnant is an inert oil. Alternatively, the process may consist of impregnation with a water solution of sodium fluoride, zinc chloride, &c., seasoning, and finally a light impregnation with montan wax. Sodium biborate may be used in this maner for fireproofing. Oils or other waxes may be mixed with the montan wax in any of the above processes for the purpose of rendering penetration easier, or colouring materials, e.g., oil soluble dyes, may be added. Candelilla. and carnauba wax may be substituted for montan wax.
