Abstract

264,169. International Combustion Engineering Corporation, (Assignees of Runge, W., and Packard, E. A.). March 12, 1925, [Convention date]. Drawings to Specification. Carbonizing processes.-Coal is pulverized in the presence of a current of hot gaseous medium and is conveyed through piping to a separator, being further heated while in transit, as by introducing hotter gas into the mixture, for drying, oxidizing, or otherwise treating the coal which after separation is partially carbonized or completely gasified in a retort or burnt in a furnace for steam raising &c. In one arrangement the temperature within the mill is raised to about 212‹ F. and additional air heated to about 500‹ F. or more in a preheater is introduced into the coal and air mixture on its way to a separator. Coal from the separator is fed to a carbonizing retort. Flue gases from a preheater may replace the additional air and some of the contaminated air from the separator may be supplied to the retort. In another arrangement, the coal is treated to prepare it for burning in pulverized form in a furnace. Comparatively cool flue gases are conducted to the pulverizing mill tempered or not with air and hotter flue gases are introduced into the mixture so as to maintain the temperature high enough partially to carbonize the coal while in transit to the separator, the residue being led to burners together with the preheated air. Gases leaving the separator are collected. Specifications 242,621, 242,622, 242,623, and 249,086 are referred to.
