Mills and apparatus.-In apparatus for milling chocolate and like plastic materials of the type comprising planetary rolls rotatable around a central roll and also on their own axes, some or all of the planetary rolls and also, if desired, the central roll, are formed with through-passages or gaps so that the material can pass transversely through the longitudinal axes thereof. Fig. 3 shows alternate planetary rolls 1 and the central roll 2 provided with diametral through-passages 3, 4. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the leading faces 5 of the through-passages in the rolls are substantially radial, and the edges 6, 7 of the passages lie on helical lines. Beaters constituted by cranked bars 8 alternate with gapped rolls, and the ends of the bars may be disposed helically. The shaft 11 of the central roll 2 is driven by means of a pulley 12, and, within the casing 10, carries at its ends spur wheels 13 gearing with wheels 14 on the ends of the planetary rolls or beaters, the wheels 14 meshing with internallytoothed surfaces 15 on the casing 10. The material is introduced by way of a hopper 16 and is discharged through an outlet 18 which can be closed by a shutter 17. Discs 19 on the shafts 9 of the beaters engage bearing-surfaces 20, 21 on the central roll 2 and on the rolls 1. The diameters of the co-operating rolls may differ slightly from the diameters of the gear-wheels thereon so that there is slip at the points of contact. The rolls 1, 2 may be conical, and the ends of the beaters may lie on a conical surface.
